Registration with the Genuis Student Information System - Frequently Asked Questions

The Learning Institute is currently rolling out Genuis, a Student Information System. This FAQ is intended for learners registering for:

  • Leadership in Long Term Care
  • Critical Care Nursing Program

If you have successfully submitted an electronic registration form, you should receive an automated email generated by Genuis, our student information system, saying your account in the system has been created. If you do not receive this or receive an email saying that your account was denied, please contact LearningInstitute@nshealth.ca

If you need to register for more than one program/course please contact LearningInstitute@nshealth.ca before registering for the second program/course. This is true even if the registration is a few years after the first one.

The part-time study option is designed so learners can study while working. The intensity of the full-time study option requires that learners not work while studying. Please refer to each program information page for more detailed information. Please feel free to use the Contact Us Tab on the Learning Institute Website to consult with program faculty with any further questions.

Please check the program/course specific page to see if there is a cost for your program. There are three options for program/course cost: course has no cost, paying for myself, or sponsored and paid for by my employer. If you select the incorrect option, a Learning Institute staff member may contact you to let you know of the change.

International nursing graduates are eligible for the Learning Institute’s RN Bridging/Re-Entry Program when they have been referred by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing. Learners in our specialty programs must be licensed in Canada.

Programs/courses are designed to build upon entry level competencies to prepare learners to work in specialty areas. Programming for new graduates generally requires additional support for orientation and transition to the workforce. Learners interested in Specialty programs/courses should check the program's webpage to verify the minimum amount of recent experience recommended prior to taking the program/courses. Please contact LearningInstitute@nshealth.ca

You can login to your Genius account using the information sent to your email after you submitted your application. Click the Edit Account option on the left side menu. You will then be able to edit any field where you had previously made a mistake.

You will be sent an automated email from Genuis when any changes are made to your registration status. You can also check your registration status by logging into your Genius account. The status will be visible on your dashboard. The desired course or program registration will be listed under active course if it is “Active” and under pending course if it is still “Pending”. Make sure to submit all required documents to ensure your registration is complete.

There are different required documents depending on the course/program you are applying for. Check the course/program requirements on the Learning Institute Website.  The required document blank pdfs can be found below.

Please only select the forms that apply to the course/program registration.

To submit required documents (except Confirmation of Sponsorship, if applicable), log into your Genius account. On the left side menu, choose the “External Files” option. Then click Add New File, add a description, and then select the correct document type before uploading your document(s). The status of the file will now appear as Pending. All documents must be in PDF format when submitted.

For Confirmation of Sponsorship, email the Confirmation of Sponsorship form to your sponsoring manager for them to fill out and send to LearningInstitute@nshealth.ca.

You will receive an email to let you know if your required documents are approved. Under the External Files option, it will also list the status as Approved when the file is approved. Each file is reviewed separately.

You will receive an email confirming your Acceptance and Registration into the program with detailed instructions of your next steps. You can also log back into Genius to see the email in your Message Center (available in the left menu after logging in).

Genius can be accessed using the current versions of the most common web browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge).

For a detailed list of supported browsers you can go to the following link: Browser Support – The Genius SIS Help Knowledge Base.

To review textbook list for each program/course, go to the Learning Institute website. In the Programs and Courses menu, select the program you are enrolled in, and you will see a page listing any required and optional textbooks and where they can be purchased.

The Brightspace course can be accessed through Genius by going to the left menu and clicking the “Go To LMS” button. You can also login directly to the Learning Institute's Brightspace with the same username and password you use for Genius.

The course will open approximately one week before it is scheduled to begin. Check Brightspace at that time. If you log into Brightspace before that time it may say you do not have access to any courses. If this happens please check Brightspace again closer to your scheduled course date.
