Plan of Study

Part-Time Perinatal Orientation Education Program

This study option is designed for nurses currently working with perinatal populations at Nova Scotia Health and allows for work-life balance and autonomy in learning. Online, independent study is supplemented with mandatory discussion, workshops, and simulation days to help learners consolidate material.

The program begins with normal pregnancy, labour and delivery, and post-partum and newborn care, then transitions to complications of pregnancy and the implications this has for care delivery. The program includes 54 hours of content delivered over a 40-week period.

Timeline

This represents a general timeline for the program. The exact delivery model may vary between offerings.

  • 15 modules divided into 6 sessions (6 weeks each) delivered through AWHONN online education platform
  • Testing on completion of each module
  • Independent, online study (approximately 3–4 hours per week)
  • Every 6 weeks there will be a scheduled workshop or simulation day (full-day sessions) or discussion group (1.5 hours)
