The Emergency Nursing Program (ENP) prepares Registered Nurses for professional practice in the emergency department. This performance-based program supports Registered Nurses to advance their clinical judgment, critical thinking, and clinical leadership to work collaboratively with the Interprofessional team to provide best practice guidelines. By gaining a broader insight through the Emergency Nursing Program, Registered Nurses will become more proficient in providing the patient/family with quality, safe care in the Emergency Department setting.
The program utilizes a conceptual learning approach in developing the Registered Nurse to care for patients with low to high acuity emergencies. The program has been designed with 10 Modules which organize knowledge and skills into concepts that are then applied to real-life emergency situations. Learners study a concept, then actively apply the concept to emergency case studies and simulation. Each concept is then integrated with others so, by the end of the program, graduates can apply all concepts to patient’s emergency presentations. This is an active, learner-centred approach that fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of clinical knowledge by building on previous knowledge. In turn, learners are better prepared to meet the dynamic and complex needs of patients in the emergency setting.
Group discussion, either face-to-face or via webconferencing, along with skills and simulation sessions are woven throughout the program. Depending on the study option and the experience level of the nurse, clinical in an emergency setting maybe integration throughout the program or done in blocks at designated times. This clinical learning, lasting approximately 168 hours, is provided in emergency departments at selected hospitals in Nova Scotia. You will be matched with a designated preceptor who will supervise the clinical experience under the guidance of the ENP faculty.

The Full-time Study Option (16 weeks)
The Full-Time Study Option (16 weeks) - Cape Breton only
This program is designed for New Graduates/New hires to the ED aimed at ensuring the nurse achieves the knowledge, skills and abilities required to meet the program competencies. The program will be aligned with a transition to practice approach that will support the nurse in transferring program competencies into his/her emergency nursing practice. Interested candidates should discuss this with their emergency manager, as only those who have been approved by their emergency manager for sponsorship for this course offering should register for the program. This study option will only be offered when requested by the employer.
The Part-time Study Option (24 weeks)
This study option is designed for nurses currently working in the ED. This option requires ED manager sponsorship and support to ensure learner success that would include time to participate in on-line learning activities/study, exam writing, skill labs/simulation sessions, and transition of knowledge during clinical practicum.
The Regular Part-time Study Option (35-42 weeks) — PEI only

Only those who have approval should register for the program. This study option is designed for nurses who will be working on their home nursing units while studying in the program. It is also an option for integrated clinical if hired into the Emergency setting during program.

It is recommended that nurses interested in the Emergency programs should have a minimum of six months (preferably one year) of recent experience on an acute care inpatient unit.
An active-practicing RN license with the CRNNS.
Health Care Providers enrolled in programs with clinical components are required to maintain their Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. The Learning Institute follows the Nova Scotia Health Code Blue/Pink Umbrella Policy, and requires a copy of your most recent certification on file. You will be provided with directions on how to submit documentation with your acceptance/welcome letter. If your BLS is going to expire during the program, faculty recommends you recertify prior to entering the program.
Registrants must either scan or send a photocopy of any and all current certifications (such as BLSC, ACLS, CTAS and TNCC certifications) to the Learning Institute's office.
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search may be required before clinical placement. Please check with the program admin if you are unsure if a CRC is required for your clinical placement.
