Specialized Oncology Nurse Transition to Practice Program

The Specialized Oncology Nurse Transition to Practice Program provides educational support and direction for oncology nurses based on their experience and practice environment. The Nova Scotia Health Cancer Care Program has partnered with the de Souza Institute to provide best practice nursing education across the spectrum of cancer care. 


The Nova Scotia Health Cancer Care Program follows the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology Practice Standards and Competencies for the Specialized Oncology Nurse. Eligibility

The following eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program:

  • Employment in a Nova Scotia Health nursing unit that provides cancer care
  • Active-practicing RN, LPN, or NP license with the provincial regulator
  • Sponsored by unit to participate in selected courses

Specialty Pathways

Specialty pathways support the transition to specific oncology practice environments. Learners are encouraged to collaborate with their clinical leadership team to complete all courses identified for a specific pathway, unless otherwise directed as part of their learning needs assessment.
