Overview
The Perinatal Orientation Education Program (POEP) delivers the foundational knowledge and skills required for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses to work in the perinatal environment. The program supports RNs and LPNs to advance their clinical judgment, critical thinking, and clinical leadership to work collaboratively with the interprofessional team. Whether you are a new graduate, new hire, or are very experienced in this environment, this program will enhance your understanding of theoretical concepts and best practice guidelines.
This program is designed using the academic content of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP). The program also incorporates content from the Nova Scotia Reproductive Care Program’s online education modules, Fetal Health Surveillance Education, and the ALARM education program. This material provides nurses with the theoretical knowledge needed to provide family-centered care to perinatal patients, their newborns, partners, and family members during the preconception, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. The content can also be used for perinatal continued education. The program includes didactic content, discussion sessions, workshops, and simulation experiences to permit real-time integration and application of the concepts and information.
